Kanguva, also known as “Kanguva: A Mighty Valiant Saga,” is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language period action drama film directed by Siva and written by Adi Narayana. The film is produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja, V. Vamsi Krishna Reddy, and Pramod Uppalapati under the banners of Studio Green and UV Creations. Featuring Suriya in six distinct roles, the ensemble cast includes Disha Patani and Bobby Deol in their Tamil debuts, alongside Natarajan Subramaniam, Jagapathi Babu, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Anandaraj, Ravi Raghavendra, K. S. Ravikumar, and B. S. Avinash.

 

Originally announced in April 2019 as “Suriya 39,” the film underwent delays and changes in production. It was reannounced in August with the tentative title “Suriya 42,” signifying Suriya’s 42nd film in a leading role. Principal photography commenced in Chennai in August 2022, with additional filming in Goa, Kerala, Kodaikanal, and Rajahmundry. The film’s title, Kanguva, was officially revealed in April 2023.

 

The technical team comprises Devi Sri Prasad as the music composer, Vetri Palanisamy as the cinematographer, and Nishadh Yusuf as the editor. With a budget ranging from ₹300 to ₹350 crore, Kanguva stands as one of the most expensive Indian films to date.

The film’s development faced challenges, with initial delays and a change in producers from Gnanavel Raja to UV Creations. Despite these hurdles, Kanguva is expected to hit theaters in early 2024 in standard, 3D, and IMAX formats.

 

The filming process, spanning various locations and schedules, began in August 2022 and is set to conclude in November 2023. Suriya, seen in 13 different looks, underwent extensive training for a six-pack look during the filming process.

 

Post-production work, including CGI, began in Mumbai in late June 2023, with the film expected to feature extensive visual effects.

 

The soundtrack and film score, composed by Devi Sri Prasad, mark his fifth collaboration with Suriya. Saregama holds the music rights.

 

Kanguva 2024

Kanguva is slated for release in early 2024 in 3D and IMAX formats, with Pen Studios acquiring the Hindi theatrical distribution rights. The film’s pre-release business indicates a substantial recovery, with a reported pre-release revenue exceeding ₹180 crore (US$23 million), making it the first Tamil film to achieve this milestone. The South Indian digital rights were sold for ₹80 crore, while Pen Studios secured the Hindi satellite, digital, and theatrical rights for ₹100 crore.

 

The South Indian digital rights of Kanguva have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video for home media distribution.
